Elizabeth Manessis: 30 Years of Expertise, Innovation and Empowerment

With more than three decades in medical aesthetics, Elizabeth Manessis has built a career shaped by innovation, expertise, continuous learning, and a deep commitment to patient care. In this interview, she reflects on her journey, the challenges she has overcome, the importance of empowering women, and the legacy she hopes to create for the next generation.

1. After more than 30 years in the medical aesthetics industry, what has kept you passionate about your work, and how has your vision of beauty and patient care evolved throughout your career?

What has kept me passionate after more than 30 years is the ability to make a meaningful difference in someone’s life. Medical aesthetics is so much more than treating the skin. It is about confidence, self-esteem, and helping people feel comfortable and empowered in their own skin.

When I began my career, aesthetics was very different. The technology was more limited, and the industry was much more focused on the visible signs of aging. Today, we have incredibly advanced technologies that allow us to address the skin with much greater precision and understanding.

My philosophy has evolved along with the industry. I believe beauty should never be about changing who you are. It should be about enhancing what you already have, improving the health and quality of the skin, and creating results that are natural, refined, and appropriate for each individual.

I also believe that every patient deserves to be treated as an individual. There is no one-size-fits-all approach to aesthetics. Understanding the person sitting in front of you—her concerns, her goals, her lifestyle, and her expectations—is just as important as understanding the technology.

      2. You have built your career in a highly technical and constantly evolving field. What were some of the biggest challenges you faced as a woman building your expertise and reputation, and how did you overcome them?

Building a career in a highly technical field as a woman came with challenges. There were times when I had to work harder to prove that I belonged in rooms where technology, medicine, and business were being discussed. I learned very early that confidence has to come from knowledge, preparation, and experience.

Rather than allowing those challenges to discourage me, I used them as motivation. I continuously educated myself, invested in advanced training, learned every technology I could, and surrounded myself with physicians, surgeons, dermatologists, and other professionals who challenged me to grow.

Over the years, I became certified in more than 40 laser and aesthetic technologies, but for me, certifications are only part of the story. True expertise comes from years of hands-on experience, understanding how different technologies interact with the skin, knowing when a treatment is appropriate—and, equally importantly, knowing when it isn’t.

I never stopped learning. That has been one of the greatest strengths of my career. I believe that as women, we don’t have to wait for someone to give us permission to become experts. We have to educate ourselves, believe in our abilities, and have the courage to take our place at the table.

      3. Your work combines advanced technology, clinical knowledge, education, and innovation. What do you believe sets you apart as a professional and as a leader in the aesthetics industry?

I believe what sets me apart is the combination of experience, technical knowledge, clinical judgment, and genuine passion for what I do.

Technology is constantly changing, and I have always embraced innovation. But I don’t believe in using a technology simply because it is new or popular. I want to understand the science behind it, the clinical indications, the limitations, and most importantly, whether it is truly going to benefit my patient.

After more than three decades in this industry, I have had the opportunity to work with an extraordinary range of laser, light, and body-contouring technologies and to collaborate with medical professionals from different specialties. Those experiences have taught me that the best results come from combining technology with knowledge and clinical judgment.

I also believe leadership means sharing what you know. I have had the privilege of training and mentoring other practitioners internationally, and I take that responsibility very seriously. My goal is not simply to teach someone how to operate a device. It is to teach them how to think clinically, understand the skin, respect the technology, and put patient safety and integrity first

  4.  You are not only treating patients but also training and mentoring other professionals internationally. What does it mean to you to empower other practitioners, particularly women, to grow, lead, and build successful careers in this industry?

Empowering other professionals is one of the most rewarding chapters of my career.

When you have spent decades learning through experience, you realize that knowledge becomes even more valuable when you share it. I love watching another practitioner gain confidence, develop her skills, and realize that she is capable of achieving far more than she originally believed.

For women especially, I want to be the person I wish every woman had in her corner—a mentor who says, “You are capable. Keep learning. Keep pushing yourself. Don’t be afraid to take up space.”

There is tremendous talent among women in aesthetics, and I believe we should be lifting one another up rather than competing with one another. Success doesn’t become smaller when you help someone else succeed.

My greatest satisfaction is knowing that something I taught another practitioner may ultimately help hundreds or thousands of patients. That is a legacy that extends far beyond my own treatment room.

5.  Looking at the next chapter of your career, what legacy would you like to leave behind, not only in medical aesthetics, but as a woman, entrepreneur, educator, and role model for the next generation?

At this stage of my career, legacy means much more to me than a title or an accomplishment. I want to leave behind knowledge, integrity, and people who are better because I was part of their journey.

I want to be remembered as a woman who never stopped evolving. Someone who built a career with passion and determination, embraced innovation without losing sight of the human being behind the treatment, and always believed that education was the foundation of excellence.

As an entrepreneur, I want to demonstrate that you can build something successful while staying true to your values. As an educator, I want to continue sharing the knowledge that I have gained over more than 30 years. And as a woman, I want to encourage the next generation to be confident in their expertise, ambitious in their goals, and unafraid to reinvent themselves.

I also believe my next chapter is about giving back. I want to continue mentoring, teaching, and helping women understand that their experience is their greatest asset—not something to hide or apologize for.

If I can inspire another woman to believe in herself, pursue her passion, build her own business, become an expert, or simply have the courage to start her next chapter, then I will feel that I have accomplished something truly meaningful.

My career has never really been about chasing beauty. It has been about helping people feel confident, educating others, continuing to learn, and leaving the industry better than I found it. That is the legacy I hope to leave behind.
